what is Pierrotism?
the title Pierrotism combines the word Pierrot, the name of a stock character of pantomime originating in late 17th century Italian troupe comedy (that of the sad clown in black and white), and the suffix -ism, indicating that the word is representative of a practice, system, or philosophy.
Pierrotism is the blog/newsletter/thought dumping-ground of Jay Lankau, writer and narrative designer of such claims to fame as “The Departure,” “Flood Land,” and many many editorial pieces (see: writing about niche internet micro-celebrities). I’m primarily a fiction writer and aspiring video game narrative designer, secondarily an amateur seltzer sommelier, and tertiarily a gay Latino man of trans experience - though that last one certainly informs everything else I do. Pierrotism is my place for reviews and recommendations, scathing cultural criticisms, and other essays. here, I can write without the pressure of submitting the result for publication; more stream of consciousness, less formal, and 100% the ramblings of someone who must hyper-analyze every aspect of his life. also, I care about writing and the craft of writing a lot, so I want to talk about that too. think of this as my mission statement.
for the foreseeable future, Pierrotism is free to the public (!) and the private I guess (!!). however, I would love to launch a paid subscription in the future to allow for more tightly-knit discussions and conversations with readers and fellow writers, with resources, critiques, Q&A, advice, etc.
